Report to the head of Credit Research. This is a replacement role but the role has also changed wrt areas of responsibility.

Our client is an investment management business fully invested in meeting client needs more effectively. They are focused on helping their clients grow and protect their investments, by managing risk and volatility and offering innovative solutions and best of breed building blocks to meet their needs. They tap into the skills and capabilities of the broader group in South Africa, Namibia and international markets to leverage a broad range of investment opportunities that are not typically accessible to investors.

The company is a new generation investment manager that offers investors access to more sources of return and more ways to manage risk. In the institutional space in South Africa as well as their global business, they pride themselves on offering solutions to address clients’ holistic balance sheet needs and to support business strategies in the reallocation of investment capital in the face of increasing regulatory pressures.  To further aid their client value proposition and to scale, the company was recently integrated under the holistic corporate and institutional (C&I) invest business and resides within C&I markets management structure.

They now seek a senior credit analyst to join their team.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

  • You will be required to work closely with the risk function in the company to ensure all breaches per credit limits are reported timeously and specific action is taken to address the breaches;
  • You will be responsible for the management of credit default rates;
  • You will be required to display strong analytical insight coupled with in- depth credit knowledge;
  • Credit research:
    • You will be responsible for all existing functions performed by the senior credit analyst:
    • You will be required to manage the planning, execution and governance for new and annual credit reviews/ratings and deal transactions;
    • You will be required to review and quality control submissions by junior credit analysts to the relevant investment committees;
    • You will be responsible for presentation, support and enablement of team members at relevant governance forums;
    • You will be responsible for assessment of new transactions where credit risk is undertaken. Proactive engagement with deal teams on complex deal transactions around structure, covenants and pricing;
    • You will be required to interact with relevant legal advisor to ensure that legal agreements are concluded for all transactions where credit risk is taken.
    • You will be required to review of exposure limits, ratings and systems for credit  exposures;
    • You will be required to ensure team compliance with the bank’s credit risk framework, lgd models and prudential limit guidelines
    • You will be required to work closely with the head of credit research in the management and reporting of  breaches in terms of concentrations and risk limits;
    • You will be responsible for attendance, input and interaction at relevant forums, committees etc. related to credit risk. Participate as a voting member on the assigned credit committee;
    • You will be required to make recommendations to optimise credit processes and “ways of working”;
    • You will be responsible for ad hoc requests related to credit research function;
  • Client engagement:
    • You will be responsible for providing key stakeholders with pro-active research insights into trends, market risk appetite, issues, threats and opportunities in all credit portfolios;
    • You will be required to be proactive in sharing insights across the company business and risk cluster in respect of counterparties where credit exposure is taken;
    • You will be responsible for partnering with business clusters to maintain credit losses, profitability and other credit risk exposures;
    • You will be required to work in collaboration with the portfolio managers, to ensure alignment in thinking about credit exposures;
  • Asset class knowledge:
    • You will be required to provide insight and optimise problem management processes with risk prone investments on the surveillance and watchlist;
    • You will be required to facilitate the understanding for the suitability of instruments for specific portfolios in accordance with their mandates;
    • You will be required to propose strategies for managing identified risks in credit;
  • Analysis:
    • You will be required to ensure the analysis, identification and mitigation of counterparty exposures and mitigations through detailed knowledge of environmental factors;
    • You will be required to have a detailed knowledge of the critical key macro environmental impacts and inter-relationships e.g. jurisdictional compliance, sector developments, regulations, financial markets, country risk;
    • You will be required to understand and apply/translate the critical micro-environmental impacts and relationships e.g. company performance trends, financial data, debt profile, gearing, projected cash flows, operations;
    • You will be required to proactively manage credit risk metrics that are identified via risk dashboards and reporting;
    • You will be required to provide technical support in the implementation of a credit limit monitoring system with risk and operations.

  • You are a self-starter;

  • You have excellent communication (verbal and written) skills in English;
  • You have good presentation skills;

 

 

CORE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • You are a CA(SA), CFA – this would be considered favourable;
  • You have a minimum of 5 years current, relevant experience in an asset management environment and exposure to credit portfolio risk;
  • You have exposure to credit risk modelling;
  • You have knowledge of factors affecting national and global companies and their impact on investors;
  • You have knowledge of risk management methodologies, tools, governance structures and regulatory requirements;
  • You have a thorough understanding of the investment process and the risks therein.
