Give where it will make a difference 10 October 2011, is World Homeless Day and Cape Town, like cities the world over, is a magnet for the homeless and those looking for opportunities. But did you stop to think that a well-meaning hand-out might contribute more to the problem than the solution? Giving money directly to those begging can actually enable a life on the street, driving a cycle of aggressive begging, violence and alcohol or drug addiction associated with homelessness. Instead, give where it will make a difference by supporting organisations who are working directly in the field - and who understand the challenges faced by those living on the street. This World Homeless Day, consider setting up a direct debit order to support the great work of existing organisations.
